9 October 1963: the Vajont dam

It 's still there, with all its magnificence. Among the world's highest dams to hold the water of the Vajont torrent that runs through the valley of Erto and Casso flowing into the river Piave, sacred to the Nation.

The Vajont dam is not known for the energy generated, but more so for a great tragedy. On the evening of September 9, 1963, the second biggest landslide in the world broke away from Mount Toc, slipping into the reservoir and generating a huge wave that sowed death and destruction. The most reliable estimate speaks of nearly 2,000 victims.
An event that has marked this land and these people. Human error that has inevitably changed history.
